April 24, 2022 / Genesis 33-34:

“Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, – Genesis 32:28 (NIV)












Jacob’s family had issues but they were

Then the LORD said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”

– Genesis 31:3 (NIV)

I am the God who appeared to you at Bethel, where you…made a vow to me. Now get ready and go back to the land where you were born.’  – Genesis 31:13 (GNT)

Bethel: House of God (Strong’s)












(v.14) Jacob says he’s going to Seir (where his family is)

Seir: The name of a mountainous region occupied by the Edomites (EBD)

Seir: Rough (Strong’s)

But Jacob goes to Succoth (No Believers there) (v.17)

Succoth: Booths (Easton’s), Tents (Hitchcock’s)

One problem with arriving safely at Shechem: (v.18)

…the LORD said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”

– Genesis 31:3 (NIV)

Shechem: The neck (between the shoulders) as the place of burdens (Strong’s)

Instead of doing what God said, Jacob decides to do something religious (It makes him feel better) (v.20)

El Elohe: Israel – The Mighty God of Israel (Strong’s)

“Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, – 1 Samuel 15:22 (NIV)

Jacob settles in Shechem and years go by

Jacob builds an altar and God

In Chapter 34 will not be mentioned

(Genesis 34) What Does it Look Like Ten Years Later?

The Results of Jacob’s Compromise:

This story is about Dinah and/or (v.1)

Dinah: Judgment (Hitchcock’s)

Result 1: Jacob’s daughter is (v.2)

Shechem…took her and lay with her by force. – Genesis 34:2-3 (NASU)

Shechem is part of the Hivites: Wicked, wickedness (Hitchcock’s)

The father (Hamor) offers no (vv.8-10)

Hamor: Donkey (NBD)

Result 2: Dad is no longer seen as the (v.13)

If a Dad doesn’t lead his family will

(v.25) Result 3: Jacob’s sons are

…the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. – James 1:20 (NKJV)

Result 4: Jacob’s sons are (vv.27-29)

Result 5: Jacob’s sons lose all for Dad (v.31)

But they replied, “Should he (JACOB) have treated our sister like a prostitute?” – Genesis 34:31 (NIV)

Fortunately, Jacob is ready to hear God again

Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.” – Genesis 35:1 (NKJV)
