March 5, 2023 / Ephesians 5:25-33

Husbands, love (agapao) your wives, even as Christ also loved (agapao) the church, and gave himself for it;

– Ephesians 5:25 (CWSB)

Agapeo is based on a , not

Love: agapao – to esteem, love, indicating a direction of the will and finding one’s joy in something or someone. It differs from philéō (G5368), to love, indicating feelings, warm affection, the kind of love expressed by a kiss (phílēma [G5370]) (CWSBD)

As Christ loved (agapao) the Church, I will love my wife:

By being faithful to her even

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

– Romans 5:8 (NASB 2020)

Even if she is to love and openly

For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, – Romans 5:10 (NASB 2020)

With an and love

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 8:38-39 (NASB 2020)

As her

When he (Jesus) had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place…For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you – John 13:12-15 (ESV)

By (washing) words (rhema) that bring (catharsis) and not and that convey that she is (hagiazo) and not (vv.26-27)

That he might sanctify (hagiazo) and cleanse (katharizo) it with the washing of water by the word (rhema)

Rhema: that which is spoken, saying, speech, word (MCED)

Sanctify: hagiazo – “to make holy”, signifies to set apart for God, to make a person or thing the opposite of koinos, “common” (VCED)

Cleanse: katharizō – to cleanse, purge (OTESD)

Catharsis and cathartic both trace to the Greek word kathairein, meaning “to cleanse, purge” (MWD)

By her from (v.27)

…not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish (v.27) (KJV)

By assuring her that she has a with me

That he might present it to himself a glorious church (v.27) (KJV)

By for all her (v.29)

For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth (ektrepho) and cherisheth (thalpo) it, even as the Lord the church (v.29 CWSB)

Nourish: ektrephō – to nourish (feed CWSBD), promote health and strength (MCED)

Cherish: thalpo – “to keep warm,” as of birds covering their young with their feathers (to brood MBD), “to cherish with tender love, to foster with tender care (Vine’s)













Then the LORD God said to the woman, “You will suffer terribly when you give birth – Genesis 3:16 (CEV)

The LORD said to the man…the ground will be under a curse because of what you did. As long as you live, you will have to struggle to grow enough food. – Genesis 3:17 (CEV)













(v.28) my own body, not my own body because in God’s eyes we are (one flesh) (vv.28-31)

…love their own wives as [being in a sense] their own bodies (v.28 AMP)
