Paul begins 1st Corinthians:

Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.

– 1 Corinthians 1:7 (NIV)

Context: Spiritual Gifts in the

…but the one who prophesies edifies the church (v.4) (NASB)

…strive to excel for the edification of the church (v.12) (NASB)

…in church I prefer to speak…that I may instruct others also (v.19) (NASB)

…if the whole church gathers (v.23) (NASB)

Tongues: Speaking to (v.2)

…we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” – Acts 2:11 (NIV)

Prophecy:

Forth-telling the heart of God more than foretelling (v.3)

Prophecy is speaking to

But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort.

– 1 Corinthians 14:3 (NIV)

Speaking in Tongues is good (v.4)

But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, – Jude 1:20 (NASB)

Prophecy: Good for (v.4)

In church, do what (vv.5-6, 12)

Paul tells us that Tongues is a form of (vv.14-15)

Paul is saying: Praying with his mind and praying with his spirit are both (vv.13-15)

Tongues is a form of to God (v.16)

If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand (idiotes) say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?

– 1 Corinthians 14:16 (NIV)

Indicates: Paul refrains from but doesn’t Tongues (vv.18-19)

Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues

– 1 Corinthians 14:39 (NIV)

Goal of the Church Meeting: (vv.18-19)













A Calvary Perspective

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control
