The Power of the Tongue

March 10, 2024 / James 3:1-12

(v.1) Our speech has the power to

 “But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.

– Deuteronomy 18:20 (NASB95)

 “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.” – James 1:26 (NKJV)

(v.2) Our speech is a sign of

“But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

– Matthew 12:36-37 (NASB95)

 (vv.3-4) Our speech has the power to

(vv. 5-6) Our speech has the power to

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

– Proverbs 18:21 (NASB)

 “For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, contention quiets down.”

 (vv.7-8) Humans have to tame the tongue

“For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace” – Romans 8:5-6 (NASB95)

 (vv.7-8) Our tongues are filled with

 “In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise.” – Proverbs 10:19 (NKJV)

 “Like a madman who throws Firebrands, arrows and death, so is the man who deceives his neighbor, and says, “Was I not joking?” – Proverbs 26:18-19 (NASB95)

 (vv.9-10) Our speech is a reflection of

“The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.

 Some Things to Consider about Our Speech:

  1. Ask the to help

 “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you” – Colossians 3:16 (NASB)

         2. Take the time to before you speak

“This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger” – James 1:19 (NASB95)

        3. Choose to say only what about your life

 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” – 1 Peter 2:9 (NASB95)

       4. Choose to over others

 “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.”

– Ephesians 4:29 (NASB95)
