Compassion in Action

April 14, 2024 / Luke 7:1-17

Jesus therefore answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.  – John 5:19 (NASB77)

 Jesus’ Response to Faith (vv.1-10)

Religious people Judge “Worthiness” by (vv.4-5)   

“He is worthy (deserves [NIV], axios) for You to grant this to him (v.4) (NASB)

 Worthy: axios – deserving (OTESD) worthy, Some believe it refers to a set of scales…(CWSBD)

The Centurion declares that he is worthy

…for I am not worthy (axios) – Luke 7:6-7 (NASB)

“Great Faith” is revealed by trusting God’s

Jesus’ Response to Despair (vv.11-17)

Soon afterward Jesus went to a city called Nain (Beauty); and (many of [LITV]) His disciples were going along with Him, accompanied by a large crowd. – Luke 7:11 (NASB)

Like God His Father, Jesus healed because of (v.13)

When the Lord saw her, He felt compassion (splagchnízomai) for her and said to her, “Do not go on weeping. – Luke 7:13 (NASB)

 Compassion: splagchnízomai – To feel deeply or viscerally, to yearn, have compassion (CWSBD)
















…and a man with leprosy came to Jesus… Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out with His hand and touched him, and *said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed – Mark 1:40-41 (NASB)

…a large crowd followed Him. 30And two people who were blind, sitting by the road, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” … 34Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes; – Matthew 20:29-34 (NASB)

Now Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “I feel compassion for the people, …they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, seven large baskets full. 38And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. – Matthew 15:32-38 (NASB)
















(v.15) And the dead man sat up and began to speak (laleo). And Jesus gave him back to his mother –Luke 7:15 (NASB 2020)

Speak: laleo – It is used especially of children with the meaning of to talk much (CWSBD) to discourse, to make an address (MCED) Preach (OTESD)

The Crowd Responds to the Miracle (vv.16-17)

They were all filled with awe and praised (doxozo) God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” 17This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country. – Luke 7:16-17 (NIV)

What Jesus said this to those who Him  

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign – Matthew 12:38-39 (ESV)

But to those who Him and would be used by Him prayed for and

Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” – Acts 4:29-30 (NIV)
