Preparing for “This Kind”

July 7, 2024 / Luke 9:27-45

(v.29) He was transfigured (metamorphooô) before them – Matthew 17:2 (NASB)

In the time of prayer the disciples are (v.32)

(vv.34-35)

When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were terrified. 7And Jesus came to them and touched them and said, “Get up, and do not be afraid.” 8And raising their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus Himself alone. – Matthew 17:6-8 (NASB)

(vv.38-39) Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatic (seleniazomai)– Matthew 17:15 (KJV)

Lunatic: seleniazomai – to be moon-struck, i.e. crazy: KJV – be a lunatic.

Selene: moon ([Latin] lunaticus – moon-struck)

(vv.40-41)

Two hindrances in that generation (and this): in Jesus and views of Jesus

And Jesus answered and said, () “O faithless and perverse () generation, how long shall I be with you, and bear with you? bring hither thy son.” – Luke 9:41 (ERV)

Perverse: diastrepho – misinterpret (OTESD) to turn or twist throughout or to distort (CWSBD)

The Dad’s Problem: He believed that what Jesus was saying

But he just couldn’t believe it for

And He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22″It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!” 23And Jesus said to him, ” ‘If You can?’ (if you can! [NAS]) All things are possible to him who believes.”  24Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief.”

– Mark 9:21-24 (NASU)

Notice: The problem wasn’t (Jesus )

The problem wasn’t a lack of (v.1)

Jesus says that is the problem

The solution is (Matthew 17:20)

Apparently, needs to be

Then coming up to Jesus privately, the disciples said, Why were we not able to cast him out? 20And Jesus said to them, Because of your unbelief. For truly I say to you, If you have faith as a grain of mustard, you will say to this mountain, Move from here to there! And it will move. And nothing shall be impossible to you. 21But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting. – Matthew 17:19-21 (LITV)

Three things lacking in the disciples’ lives:

(Matthew 17:14-18) and (Mark 9:29)

The Result:

Fasting is disciple

Jesus said to them, …the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.

– Matthew 9:15 (NASB95)

“But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face 18so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

– Matthew 6:17-18 (NASB95)

God gives in times of fasting

Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was there prophets and teachers… 2While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

– Acts 13:1-2 (NASB95)

People who fasted were people of

(Paul) (in) labor and travail, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.

– 2 Corinthians 11:27 (ASV)
