June 9, 2024 / Pastor Dan Plourde / Luke 8:40-56

 (vv.41-42)

…because his only daughter (thugater), a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed (sumpnígō) him.  – Luke 8:42 (NIV)

 Daughter: thugater – daughter, a female child (Strong’s)

Crushed: sumpnígō – to choke, suffocate. To choke or throttle and thus to suffocate (CWSBD)

And one of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came, and upon seeing Him, fell at His feet 23and pleaded with Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live. – Mark 5:22-23 (NASB)

Earlier? On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled… But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus. – Luke 6:6-11 (NIV)  (how they might kill Jesus – Matthew 12:14 [NIV])

Jairus: meaning whom Jehovah enlightens (CWSBD)

(v.43)

 …and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but instead had become worse  – Mark 5:26 (NASB)

 …for she was saying (lego) to herself, “If I only touch His cloak, I will get well.” – Matthew 9:21 (NASB 2020)

Saying: lego – to “lay” forth, i.e., (figuratively) relate (in words, usually of systematic or set discourse)

 Jesus’ goal: Get her to (v.45)

And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. – Mark 5:32 (KJV)

 Telling the story is a little (v.47)

All she has to do is share what

And He said to her, “Daughter (thugater), your faith has made you well (sozo); go in peace.” – Luke 8:48 (NASB)

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (sozo). – Romans 10:13 (CWSB)

…for she was saying (lego) to herself, “If I only touch His garment, I will get well (sozo).” 22But Jesus turning and seeing her said, “Daughter, take courage; your faith has made you well (sozo).”  At once the woman was made well (sozo). – Matthew 9:21-22 (NASB95

God doesn’t want to expose her but wants to use her story to give

Jairus needs to hear her story because his and respected are all saying “there’s no

Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed (sozo).” – Luke 8:50 (NIV)

After verse 50, It’s time to make a

A ruler having come, was bowing to him, saying (lego) that ‘My daughter just now died, but, having come, lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. – Matthew 9:18 (YLT)

When I choose to believe do two things:

Begin what about my situation

Let us hold fast the profession (homologia) of our faith without wavering;

(for he is faithful that promised) – Hebrews 10:23 (KJV)

 Then out the (v.54)

He put them all out… (v.54 KJV, NKJV, CWSB, LITV, MSB, LSV)

He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. – Mark 6:5-6 (NIV)
