Pray Then in This Way

January 8, 2023 / Pastor Dan Plourde / Matthew 6:7-13 & Luke 11:1-4

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up…However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” – Luke 18:1-8 (NIV)

When Jesus prayed it took

And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say (lego), Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name – Luke 11:1-2 (KJV)

Not saying pray these words but like this

Say: lego – verb to “lay” forth, i.e., relate in words (usually of systematic or set discourse)

Jesus this as an for prayer (v.9)

Pray this in this way (NASU)

This, then, is how you should pray (NIV)

The Approach: Our Father who is in heaven (v.9)

The God of Heaven is a

…you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” – Romans 8:15 (NASB95)

“Our Father” invites to Himself

“Our Father” desires a with

“Our Father,” in the plural pronoun means I am coming to the Father

We do not end The Lord’s Prayer by using the phrase “in Jesus’ name”

The 1st Petition: Hallowed be Your Name (v.9)

Hallowed: hagiazo – to make holy, to venerate

Each name of God about God

When I hallow God’s name, I for who He is

I hallow His name for not

God will not to (hallow) His name

The most important thing in prayer is that God’s name be magnified and exalted

The 2nd Petition: Thy Kingdom come (v.10)

Come: erchomai – to come or go

I pray about what’s to God

Here it’s kingdom come, not kingdom come

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you – Matthew 6:33 (NASB)

Who are the people in my world who need Jesus?

Gospel, Missionaries, That His kingdom goes forward

When I pray “Thy Kingdom Come” I am asking for something that is not to come

into

I am asking for God’s kingdom to itself in and through life and the lives of

Implied in the Lord’s Prayer is that I can

Jesus seems to imply that if we “Thy kingdom come” it probably

The 3rd Petition: Thy Will (thelema) be done on earth as it is in Heaven (v.10)

Will: thelema – denotes “a will, that which is willed” (Thayer’s)

That which pleases and creates joy (CWSB)

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! – Psalm 34:8-9 (NKJV)

Realize God has a plan for

I and to God’s plan for my life

I am asking for God’s intervention:

for me, my family, and situations
