“God has given each of us the ability to do certain things well. . . ” – Romans 12:6 (LB)

Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.

– 1 Corinthians 1:7 (NIV)













Context: Spiritual Gifts in the

…in church I prefer to speak…that I may instruct others also (v.19) (NASB)

…if the whole church gathers (v.23) (NASB)

Tongues: Speaking to (v.2)

…if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays (v.14) (NASB)

Prophecy: Speaking to (v.3)

But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.

– 1 Corinthians 14:3 (NIV)

In church do what (v.12)

Indicates: Paul from but doesn’t Tongues in church (vv.18-19)

…do not forbid speaking in tongues – 1 Corinthians 14:39 (NIV)

Tongues: A Sign to Unbelievers? (vv.21-22)

For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people…Yet they would not hear

The result for some then and now: (v.21)

And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others were mocking and saying, “They are full of sweet wine.” – Acts 2:12-13 (NASB95)













Be Sensitive to Outsiders (v.23)

Calvary’s Motto for Church Services:

If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned (idiotes), or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? – 1 Corinthians 14:23 (CWSB)

Prophecy benefits and (vv.24-25)

But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort.

Not saying, , but this is what you are doing and (v.26)

What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has (echo) a psalm, has (echo) a teaching, has (echo) a revelation, has (echo) a tongue, has (echo) an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.

If intelligibility is a priority for a worship service, how then should worship proceed?

Rule 1: In church do what is (v.26)

Let all things be done for edification. – 1 Corinthians 14:26 (NASB95)

The Holy Spirit does not Himself (v.31)

…one by one (v.31) (NASB)

…in turn (v.27) (NASB)

The Result of Prophecy: (v.31)

If it’s from God (v.32)

…the fruit of the Spirit is love (agape)…self-control  – Galatians 5:22 -23 (NASB)
