How to Handle Temptation

Jesus is tempted as a

Speaking of Jesus: For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. – Hebrews 4:15 (NASB95)

Temptation is not

In order for temptation to be a temptation,

it must actually be a

 

Temptation One (vv.1-4)

40 days =

Hungry: peinaoo – to crave ardently, to seek with eager desire (v.2)

 

We will be tempted in our (v.3)

… tell this stone to become bread – Luke 4:3 (NASB)

Will begin with

The devil told Him, “Since You are the Son of God” – Luke 4:3 (ISV)
The temptation will be as Jesus gets hungrier

So Jesus’ response will be for

And Jesus answered him, saying (lego), It is written, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. – Luke 4:4 (KJV)

Lego: “lay” forth, i.e., relate in words (usually of systematic or set discourse) (OTESD)

 And take…the sword (machaira) of the Spirit, which is the word (rhema) of God – Ephesians 6:17 (CWSB)

 

Word: rhema – that which is spoken, declaration (MBD)

Sword: machaira – a short sword (OTESD)

 

Temptation Two (vv.5-8)

Satan’s Claim (v.6) (Satan) “I WILL GIVE IT TO YOU”

… the god of this world has blinded the minds… – 2 Corinthians 4:4 (NASB
…the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. – 1 John 5:19 (NASB)

Satan’s way would ultimately mean

…and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.  – Hebrews 9:22 (RSV)

Temptation Three (vv. 9-13)

Tempted in the point of the place

 

In the Place of Worship temptation comes through

For He will give His angels orders concerning you, To protect you in all your ways. On their hands they will lift you up, So that you do not strike your foot against a stone. – Psalms 91:11-12 (NASB)

 

Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (Accurately Handling [NAS]) the word of truth. – 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)
