He Wants a Full House

(v.1) Watching him closely: paratēreō – to watch narrowly, to observe or watch insidiously, to observe scrupulously (MCED)

(v.2) Edema/Dropsy: hudrōpikós – húdōr: water, and ōps: face, a condition of excessive accumulation of serous fluid in the body (CWSD)

 And this shall be his uncleanness in his issue: whether his flesh run with his issue, or his flesh be stopped from his issue, it is his uncleanness…Thus shall ye separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness, that they die not in their uncleanness, when they defile my tabernacle that is in the midst of them. – Leviticus 15:3 & 31 (ASV)

Jesus “responded” or “answers”: He knows

If He doesn’t heal they will say: He has

If He heals, they will say: He’s the

 (v.4) If they said “NO” they would

If they said “YES” they would be breaking their

regarding the Sabbath 

Took hold of him: epilambánō – to take hold upon, lay hold of in order to hold or detain oneself (CWSBD)

And He asked them, “Which of you whose son or ox falls into a pit on the Sabbath day will not immediately pull him out?” – Luke 14:5 (MSB)

Parable of the Guests (vv.7-11)

Do not claim honor in the presence of the king, and do not stand in the place of great men; for it is better that it be said to you, “Come up here,” than for you to be placed lower in the presence of the prince, whom your eyes have seen. – Proverbs 25:6-7 (NASB95)

Though the LORD is exalted, he takes note of the humble; but he knows the haughty from a distance. – Psalms 138:6 (CSB)

 So far Jesus has openly confronted:

The religious leaders for their (vv.1-6)

The guests for their  (vv.7-11)

And now the host for his (vv.12-14)

Then he told the man who had invited him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, stop inviting only your friends, brothers, relatives, or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they may invite you in return and you would be repaid (v.12) (ISV)

(vv.16-24)

Guests were invited and initially (v.16)

But on the day of the “banquet” (NIV) they

The 1st was kept away by (v.18)

The 2nd was kept away by or (v.19)

The 3rd was kept away by (v.20)

 The master says invite those who can’t and those who would normally be excluded from (v.21)

 Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel (anagkazo) them to come in, so that my house will be full’ – Luke 14:23 (NIV)

 Compel: anagkazōto – necessitate – compel, constrain by force (OTESD) to force, compel by external violence (CWSBD)

 God wants His house

The master says compel them because the poor, those with disabilities, the blind and those limping would have a hard time that they would really be and that they would be to the banquet
