Note how often Luke discusses wealth or the associated issue of generosity: (3:11, 5:11, 6:23-26, 34-35, 38, 7:5, 8:3, 14, 10:34-35, 11:41, 12:13-21, 33, 14:12-14, 33, 16:9-13, 19-31, 18:22, 19:8)

Handling material goods is a major life and spiritual issue (NIV Life Application Commentary)




















The Lord shall increase you more and more, you and your children. Ye are blessed of the Lord which made heaven and earth. – Psalms 115:14-15 (KJV)

…when they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break; so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink – Luke 5:6-7 (NASB95)

And they all ate and were satisfied; and the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve baskets full. – Luke 9:17 (NASB)

Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?”  – Mark 10:17 (NKJV)

(vv.20-22) Jesus leaves out (Exodus 20:3)

You shall have no other gods before me… – Exodus 20:3 (NASB)

 Jesus’ Motivation:

Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack” … – Mark 10:21 (NKJV)

Jesus knows this man needs (v.22)

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.  – Matthew 6:21 (NASB)

He was all in with Jesus, until Jesus told him what to  with

his  “…distribute to the poor”… (v.22) (NKJV)

 Jesus knows that if God isn’t in our finances, then God isn’t Apparently, God isn’t interested in being place on anyone’s list

His response his (v.23)

At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad… – Mark 10:22 (NIV)

Jesus Him, but didn’t Him

Money becomes our God when God to tell us what with our money

” …how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!” – Mark 10:24 (NKJV)

Following Jesus doesn’t mean a life of

…Many times more in this present time… – Luke 18:30 (NKJV)

Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms () for My sake and for the gospel’s sake, but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life”…  – Mark 10:29-30 (NASB)

The always belongs to

However, a firstborn among animals, which as a firstborn belongs to the Lord, no man may consecrate it; whether ox or sheep, it is the Lord’s. – Leviticus 27:26 (NASB95)

 Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first and best part of all your income. Then your barns will be full, and your vats will overflow with fresh wine.  – Proverbs 3:9-10 (GWT)
