How God Sees It

Originally the Sabbath was given to be a
















Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work – Exodus 20:8-11 (NIV)
















Mishnah: This fundamental mishna enumerates those who perform the primary categories of labor prohibited on Shabbat, which number forty-less-one. – Shabbath 7:2

 (v.1) When you come into your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck the heads with your hand, but you shall not use a sickle on your neighbor’s standing grain. – Deuteronomy 23:25 (NKJV)

The Pharisees placed on par with scripture but Jesus points to God’s (vv.3-4)

God’s Heart: Human takes precedence over religious (vv.3-4)

David answered Ahimelech the priest,” 3Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever you can find.” 4But the priest answered David, “I don’t have any ordinary bread on hand; however, there is some consecrated bread here…” – 1 Samuel 21:1-7 (NIV)

Matthew adds: Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent?  – Matthew 12:5 (NIV)

 Priests worked on the Sabbath: ‘Then on the sabbath day two male lambs one year old without defect, and two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, and its drink offering: 10’This is the burnt offering of every sabbath in addition to the continual burnt offering and its drink offering. – Numbers 28:9-10 (NASB)

Jesus proclaims to them that He is (v.5)

 In the Gospels, the only time Jesus gets angry is

at judgmental (v.10)

He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” – Mark 3:5 (NIV)
