March 3, 2024 / Luke 6:24-36

Jesus teaches as the listens in  (Luke 6:20 & 7:1) 

Speaking to Disciples so salvation is

The Four Be-Attitudes (vv.20-23)

Then looking up at his disciples, he said: Blessed (Beati – Latin) are you… 6:20 (CSB)

But” The Four Woes are the Be-Attitudes

Woe: ouai – Interjection of grief or indignation of denouncing misery and pitying it. Woe, alas (CWSBD)

But alas for you that are rich! (v.24) (ANT)

Woe, “I deeply pity you if this is true.” (Swindoll)

Which would you prefer in the long run? Money or God?” (v.24)

But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort (paraklesis) – Luke 6:24 (NIV)

…the Comforter (parakletos), even the Holy Spirit – John 14:26 (ASV)

You will be enriched (made rich [CEB]) in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion

– 2 Corinthians 9:11 (NIV)

The Ways Disciples Love their Enemies (vv.27-36):

But I say to you who hear (akouo), love (agapao) your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

– Luke 6:27 (NASB)

 Hear: akouo – to hear, to understand (OTESD)

Agapao: love, indicating a direction of the will (CWSBD)

Jesus affirms Disciples will

For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God – Romans 5:10 (ASV)

Disciples to those who hate them (v.27)             

Example: Jesus

Speak about people who speak badly about me (v.28)          

…bless (eulogeo) those who curse you, pray for those who are abusive to you – Luke 6:28 (NASB)

Bless: eulogeo – to speak well of (OTESD)

Honestly and sincerely for those who have taken advantage of you (v.28)

See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled; – Hebrews 12:15 (NASB95)

A Disciple doesn’t retaliate when (v.29)

A slap in the face refers to

…in fact, you even put up with anyone who enslaves you or exploits you or takes advantage of you or pushes himself forward or slaps you in the face. – 2 Corinthians 11:20 (NIV)

And He said to them, “But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one. – Luke 22:36 (NASB)

Jesus gives illustrations from (v.29B)

40And if anyone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak also. 41Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. 42Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you. – Matthew 5:40-42 (NASB)
