Teach Us To Pray IV

September 15, 2024 / Luke 11:1-4

And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. – Luke 11:1-4 (KJV)

6th Petition: And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. (v.4) (KJV)

And keep us from being tempted. – Luke 11:4 (CEV)

Protection from temptation. The request “lead us not into temptation” bothers some people because it seems to imply that God might lead people into compromising situations. But Greek grammar experts identify the phrase “lead us not” as a permissive imperative: “Do not permit us to be led into temptation.” Furthermore, a study of extrabiblical religious literature reveals that to “enter temptation” means to succumb to temptation—the idea being that one enters and even embraces temptation. Therefore, the final request of the prayer can be paraphrased, “Cause us not to give in to temptation.” (Swindoll)

Pray that you may not enter into temptation. – Luke 22:40 (ESV)

Pray that you may not enter into temptation. – Luke 22:46 (ESV)
