March 31, 2024 / John 20:1-17

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. – Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)

 (Paul) If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain, your faith also is in vain.

 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him… 3They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” – Mark 16:1&3 (NASB95)

(v.2) So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we do not know where they have put Him.

– John 20:2 (NASB)

(v.5) …he stooped to look in, and saw (blepo) the linen wrappings lying there; however he did not go in. (v.5) (NASB)

 saw: blepo – to look at (Strong’s)

“Command the sons of Israel that they send away from the camp… everyone who is unclean because of a dead person. – Numbers 5:2 (NASB95)

(vv.6-7) Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw (theorei) the linen wrappings lying there – John 20:6 (NASU)

 saw: theorei – this verb implies a greater intensity in the act of seeing such as examining (TOWNS),

usually indicating the careful observation of details (CWSBD)

(vv.8-10) So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb also entered then, and he saw (eido) and believed. – John 20:8 (NASB)

saw: eido – to know (KJV) – be aware, behold, consider, have knowledge, perceive, see, be sure, understand

(vv.11-13)

What happens when Mary calls Jesus

And they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they put Him.” 14When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus – John 20:13-14 (NASB)

 Jesus in her situation (v.14)

saw: theorei – this verb implies a greater intensity in the act of seeing such as examining (TOWNS)

Jesus begins to specifically (vv.15-16)

clinging: haptomai – to attach oneself (OTESD)
